Requirements

Dan is a retired educator who moved to Newfoundland more than twenty years ago. After finding a home in Pouch Cove, he has used his training in biology and experience as a home gardener to develop effective ways to grow food, flowers and herbs in our challenging climate. He founded the local heritage seed company, Perfectly Perennial Herbs and Seeds in 2012 with his son, and has gone on to become a garden educator, leading workshops and slideshow presentations to more than 2400 people. In these presentations, Dan explains how to extend the growing season to produce your own healthy local food. In his small, waterfront garden, by using raised beds, building soil fertility and selecting short season (cold-adapted) varieties, he has been able to produce a full range of herbs and garden vegetables, from salad greens, corn, artichokes, to squash, tomatoes and cucumbers. With 25 raised beds and 27 fruit trees on his property he has also harvested many pounds of grapes, kiwis, peaches, plums, cherries and apples. During Covid, he turned his workshop into a book. Sun, Seed & Soil: Tips and Techniques for a Northern Garden, was published by Boulder Books in 2023, has become a local best seller, and received positive feedback from many home gardeners. Dan is continuing his passionate garden journey. As a food activist, he has been leading community projects to support production of health, after founding the provincial non-profit group, Food Producers Forum. In 2002 he received the very first Community Health Champion Award, presented by the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine at Memorial University, for his work in local communities across our province.
